#TheBroom – Nelson Mandela Day

This is in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, whose life and commitment to this nation has shown that everyone is useful and has potential to bring change for the good of all. “The Broom” concept means that change is in your hands, so change begins with you, where you are. Everyone has a “broom”, that is their ability to see what is going wrong in the nation from where they are, and to fix it.

The value of a broom is its use. What is worth a change that is always spoken about but never acted upon? Activism is a pillar of Mandela’s life. And we can see that it is an important element that is lacking in our African community today. We all see the ‘dirt’ (the problems, the needs, and the injustice) but we look away and pray for God to send a ‘Mandela’. Yet it has been given to all of us the responsibility of the destiny of the earth and mankind.

To love Mandela and appreciate his long struggle for this nation is to embrace his vision and burn in his passion for others that led him to action for others. And with this, a point is made: In that activism against the existence and welfare of others is no activism at all. When we work against others in spite of where they come from or who they are, we work against ourselves. Therefore we want to change these things that affect us all. You cannot sweep away dirt by pushing it to your neighbour’s territory; it will come back to you.

This movement is for the awakening of positive activism which lies at the core foundation of this young democratic nation. Something we need to bear in mind is we don’t have all the time to act. For certain small things can be easily fixed today, but if they are left to linger; they will be the mountains of tomorrow. Every evil begins small. And when evil is systemised then it reminds us the painful past of this nation. Therefore acting now is securing a better tomorrow for generations to come.

Uplifted Life has found its broom in education. Cause the best way to sweep is to see where the dirt is. Opening the minds of the young and those who haven’t had the opportunity to be educated well and walking with them through their time of education; in giving them a vision for their a education not just a promise of better life. This enlarges the broom and places where we may not be able to act for change today; we know the rising, concerned and informed generation will do.
